My Role

Solo project created as part of Graphic Design V Class 2023

Project Goal

A creativity development app based on the “Incomplete Manifesto for Growth” by Bruce Mau

Challenge

The purpose this project was to promote the message of a manifesto in a design system through a document and promotional piece. The app is inspired by Bruce Mau's Incomplete Manifesto for Growth. It is a set of 43 instructions on sustaining creativity and avoiding burnout. Each instruction was turned into a daily challenge, along with simple creativity boosting games. The idea behind this project is that anyone can benefit from creativity, not only artists and designers. I chose to focus the project on groups which could benefit from more creative thinking such as engineers and scientist. Because of this, it uses simple activities and games using research-based methods.

Research

Creativity allows people to recognize real life problems and find new solutions. this is crucial even in a traditionally non-creative field. It is able to improve the ability to improvise and creative engineers are more likely to take risks and consider new perspectives. It is also known to improve productivity. it is important to consider new ideas and solutions. the rules layed out in the manifesto are beneficial in avoiding burnout. Various techniques are also included to keep motivation up.

Edward DeBono has written numerous books on thinking and improving creativity as well as various thinking tools. The six thinking hats are a simple metaphor to improve group decision making. This technique categorizes thinking so that evaluation of ideas can be improved. This tool is simple and easy to understand and is shown to help improve thinking habits by categorizing.Lateral thinking will be an important tool to consider in encouraging creativity. The idea is that in order to come up with new solutions, you must try new methods.
